• 'Podestrians' involved in one in 10 road accidents - Telegraph: More than half of accidents involving "podestri ans", as they have been called, are described as young people, teenagers or children. "In many accounts of minor accidents on insurance claim forms, we have seen a significant increase in drivers citing such individuals as having been a factor in the incident," ; a spokesman for the company said. The most common scenario involves a "podestri an" stepping into the road without looking properly and failing to hear an oncoming vehicle. This can force the approaching driver to brake suddenly, subsequently being hit by the car behind. And if a head full of music isn't bad enough, some podestrians are talking on their mobile phones at the same time. "The problem of music players masking the noise of cars can often be compounded by the simultaneous use of mobile phones," the spokesman said. Album sales dropped for a seventh consecutive year, but a dramatic increase in the sale of digital tracks helped keep the music industry afloat in 2006. Some 588.2 million album units sold last year, down 4.9%, while consumers purchased 581.9 million digital tracks -- a 65% increase from 2005's 352.7 million sold. Nielsen SoundScan, which released the figures Thursday, counts a block of 10 tracks sold as an album.
• Portable MP3 Player Ownership Reaches New High: New York, NY ? A new study by global market research firm Ipsos indicates that as many as one in five Americans over the age of 12 now own portable MP3 Players and one in 20 own more than one. And interest in viewing music videos, photos, TV shows and even full-length movies from these devices is especially strong among younger consumers who have experience downloading music. New findings released today from TEMPO, the company?s quarterly study of digital music behaviors, show that 20% of Americans aged 12 and older now own a portable MP3 player. This marks a significant increase over ownership levels found one year ago (15%), and nearly double the proportion of owners found in April 2003 (11%). And in a sign that not only new buyers are driving this trend, 6% of Americans own more than one portable MP3 player
